Racial Equality Policy

 

1. Background:

Bellemoor School is an 11-16 urban boys comprehensive school served by 24 different feeder Primary Schools covering the whole of Southampton City. 25% of our intake is from an Ethnic minority background.

 

2. Aims and Values:

In accordance with Bellemoor Schools Equal Opportunities policy we believe that the school as a community recognises that all individuals are different and have differing needs and that we all contribute to the schools cultural diversity which is to be celebrated, supported and encouraged. To this end the school is committed to countering racial discrimination and actively promoting good race relations in all areas of school life. This means that everyone in the Bellemoor School Community has the responsibility to recognise and protect the good of the community and has the opportunity to realise their full potential in a safe and secure environment.

 

In particular the school will monitor its work in the following areas in order to promote equal opportunities with reference to ethnic minority groups:

  • progress, attainment and assessment;
  • behaviour, discipline, rewards, inclusion and exclusion;
  • boys personal development and pastoral care;
  • teaching and learning;
  • admission, attendance and punctuality;
  • the curriculum;
  • staff recruitment and professional development;
  • membership of the Governing body; and
  • partnerships with parents and guardians, and communities.

 

3. Leadership and management:

Commitments

Bellemoor School is committed to:

  • actively countering racial discrimination and promoting equal opportunities and good race relations;
  • encouraging, supporting and helping all pupils and staff to reach theirr potential;
  • working with parents and guardians and with the wider community to counter racial discrimination and to follow and promote good practice;
  • and making sure the race equality policy and its procedures are followed.

Responsibilities

 

(a) Governing Body

The governors are responsible for:

  • making sure that the school complies with the amended Race Relations Act 1976;
  • making sure the race equality policy and its procedures are followed.

(b) Headteacher

The headteacher is responsible for:

  • making sure the race equality policy is readily available and that the governors, staff, boys and their parents and guardians know about it;
  • making sure that the race equality policy and its procedures are followed;
  • making sure that regular information is provided for staff and governors about the policy and how it is working and ensuring that training for them on the policy is provided, if necessary;
  • making sure that all staff know their responsibilities and receive training and support in carrying these out;
  • taking appropriate action in cases of racial harassment and racial discrimination.

(c) All staff

All staff, both teaching and non-teaching, are responsible for:

  • dealing with racist incidents and being able to recognise and counter racial bias and stereotyping;
  • promoting equal opportunities and good race relations and avoiding discrimination against anyone for reasons of race, colour, nationality or ethnic or national origins;
  • keeping up to date with the law on discrimination and taking up training and learning opportunities.

(d) Staff with specific responsibilities

A member of the senior management team will have overall

responsibility to monitor:

  • the co-ordination work on race equality;
  • the implementation of the race equality action plan;
  • the reports of racist incidents.

(e) Pupils

All pupils have rights under this policy to be treated without bias or discrimination with regard to their race, colour, nationality or ethnic or national origins. In addition, pupils have a responsibility to make sure that they conduct themselves, at all times, in a manner conducive to good race relations. Pupils also have a responsibility

to report to staff any incidences of racial discrimination or harassment that they witness or experience.

 

(f) Visitors and contractors

Visitors and contractors are responsible for knowing and following the race equality policy of Bellemoor School.
