Reviews, Homework and Expectations

Pupil Reviews

The excellent academic results achieved stem in part from a commitment to the detailed tracking and monitoring of the performance and achievements of every pupil.

We achieve this through our system of "Reviews". This is a system of tracking pupil progress that records the achievement of individual targets in learning, effort and behavior. The targets are linked to each pupil's own potential as indicated by standardized tests but can be revised to take account of individual progress.

The Reviews are collected at least twice a year and are considered by the boys, their parents, tutors and subject staff. The data is collected and processed using computer software which has been developed in school. Following each Review, every boy is interviewed by a member of staff. His performance is taken as a whole, his achievements are recognised, and he is given individual guidance and encouragement. Targets are set. Boys are encouraged to participate in this process and the way in which the family is enabled to take an informed part is an exciting aspect of the process.

The system and its associated software is receiving widespread recognition and is now on sale nationally under the name SCOPE. A number of schools have already bought the programme. In the Ofsted report the team judged that Bellemoors provision for monitoring and supporting pupils behaviour is excellent. There is increasing evidence of the power of the system in encouraging boys to explore the limits of their own potential.

Homework

All boys are expected to do regular homework. Boys are provided with a Day Book to record homework and achievements. Parents are asked to sign the Day Book weekly.

Any homework problems should be reported to the Year Head.

Work & Study Expectations

Every boy is responsible for his own learning.

Boys are expected to...

  • Do their best at all times.
  • Make sure they understand the purpose of the task.
  • Be confident. They can do the task, however difficult it is.
  • Plan their work and prepare for it.
  • Bring the correct equipment to the lesson.
  • Put their ideas forward for discussion.
  • Respect other boys' ideas.
  • Check written work for mistakes.
  • Check that they have completed the task.

Enjoy their work - but take it seriously.
