Policy for the more Able Pupils (extract) - Full policy available on request

The motivation of able pupils is a key factor in their development. We seek to enrich the curriculum of more able pupils in order to extend them to their full potential and broaden their knowledge of each subject area.

Able pupils are identified from Reviews and cognitive abilities tests in Year 7. The school pays careful attention to the needs of the more able pupils. Such pupils are catered for in the following ways:

  • Creation of a fast track set, especially in Maths, Modern Languages and Science.

  • Early entries for examinations where advisable.

  • Extension of present subjects to include a wider range, e.g. Triple Science (Chemistry, Biology and Physics); another language; two short courses in Technology and Statistics in Maths are proposed for the future.

  • Provision of a differentiated and enriched syllabus, i.e. extension materials.

  • Additional resources.

  • Greater freedom to explore own projects and set own targets.

  • Extended use of computers.

  • Creation of clubs and activities, e.g. chess.

  • Use of Special Needs Assistants and Teachers to support the more able.

  • Challenging target setting using Reviews.
