Primary Garden Design Day
On Wednesday 25th June 2008 we welcomed 166 Year 5 pupils from Shirley and Hollybrook schools. The focus of the day was to formulate ideas and plan and design the front area of the school. The best ideas are to be presented to a landscape gardener who will incorporate these ideas and eventually plan the proposed area. The pupils came up with some outstanding ideas and have certainly made the planner’s job extremely difficult! The staff of Upper Shirley High really enjoyed having the pupils for the day; the children really went about their task with enthusiasm and vigour and were a credit to their accompanying teachers and schools.   Congratulations to USH students for their outstanding support.

Year 5 Day with Shirley Junior
The Year 5 day with Shirley last Thursday was literally a rip roaring success with pupils demonstrating the 5 thinking skills in relation to solving a major crime in school - who kidnapped the pantomime horse? Well done to all pupils for their excellent deduction and many thanks to USH students for their support.

Awards Evening - Attendance Plea
We have a large number of boys receiving awards this year and therefore we must keep strictly to a maximum of 2 guests please for each prizewinner otherwise we will not be able to accommodate everybody.   Next year we will address this issue by having two separate celebrations for KS3 and KS4.

Auction of DVDs, CDs and Computer Games
On Wednesday this week the student council have organised with 7a1 an auction of pre-owned electronic games, DVDs and CDs e.g. Nintendo DS, PSP, PS1 and PS2 etc. It will take place in the Business Centre from 3.30 - 4.30 with Mr Eggett as the auctioneer. Viewing will take place from 3pm. In addition there will also be another naughty tuck shop, and a raffle.
All proceeds will go towards helping the children of South Rwenzori in Uganda, orphaned by Aids. The school has already had a number of activities to support this charity.

Southampton Schools Athletics Championships
The championships took place at the Sport Centre on 19th June and we enjoyed a very successful day, winning the Year 8, 9 and 10 and overall field events trophies, and only failing to win the Year 7 trophy by 1 point! Well done to all the boys who participated and congratulations to individual champions:

 Hollybrook Junior Multi Sports Day
Hollybrook held their multi sports day on our site last week. Our year 9 helpers were superb and they did a great job in encouraging the younger children – especially the year 3s!

A Big Thank You to Wickes
Mrs Silk visited Wickes to ask if they might contribute towards the new gardens the Gardening Club are working on. The manager immediately offered a huge grab bag of gravel and it arrived the following day! We were also given a generous reduction on other purchases towards the gardens so we are very grateful to Wickes for their generosity.

Our Musicians are Out and About
The Year 10 street drummers and band were playing at West Quay recently in support of Hampshire Autistic Society. They put in a fabulous performance and impressed the many onlookers.  Meanwhile our rock and jazz bands are busy, supporting Shirley Junior School’s Giant Tea Party and our GCSE Art Exhibition. The jazz band will be playing at the Bellemoor Celebration on 12th July.

New Staff
Welcome to Mrs Parsons, who joins us on 1st July as Academic Leader in the Maths department.

School Concert
There is going to be a concert celebrating all the music achievement of students throughout the school at 7.30 pm on Thursday 3rd July. The performances will include the school wind band, street drumming, Year 10 GCSE performances, singing, guitar and the jazz quartet, as well as examples of class composition work. Please put this date in your diary and come along to support the students.

Celebration of Bellemoor School
On Saturday 12th July we will be holding a ‘Farewell to Bellemoor’ celebration with ex-boys and ex-staff coming back to celebrate the school’s history before we officially become Upper Shirley High School. If you happen to be an ex-boy, or know of other ex-boys, please share this information and put the date in your diary. If anyone has photographs of the school which they would be happy to share with us I would be very grateful as I would like to create a pictorial history board for the celebration. If you are interested please email my PA, Clare Challis (clare.challis@ushschool.org).
