What is a GCSE in Music?
A GCSE in Music is in preparation for living in a contemporary, changing and multicultural society. During this course students are expected to:
- Perform and Compose in a variety of styles.
- Gain a sound musical knowledge related to four separate areas of study.
- Develop Music Technology and Studio recording skills.
- Develop their aural skills.
- Take part in an extra – curricular musical activity.
The four areas of study which will be covered over the two years are:
- Repetition and contrast in Classical music 1600 – 1899
- New directions in western Classical music 1900 – onwards.
- Popular song in context
- Rhythms, scales and modes from around the world.
How will I be assessed?
60% Coursework
During the course 30% each will be given over to:
- Performing (three performances submitted for external examination)
- Composing ( two compositions to be submitted for external examination)
40% Written Paper
This will consist entirely of questions related to the four areas of study combined with some theoretical music knowledge.
