What is a GCSE in Humanities?
A GCSE in Humanities is in preparation for living in a contemporary, changing and multicultural society. Design and making food products are compulsory parts of this course and students are expected to:
  • Choose recipes and create their own food product designs.
  • Provide the ingredients and dishes to make the food products and cook on a regular basis.
  • Work in a safe and hygienic manner.
 
Subject areas which will be covered over the two years are:
Year 10
  • Culture and beliefs, environmental issues including the destruction of the rainforests and socialisation.
Year 11
  • Power and democracy, patterns of family life, conflict and co-operation.
 
How will I be assessed?
25% Coursework
  • Your performance in coursework will be based on three studies including global pollution, pressure groups and religion and gender.
 
75% Written Paper
  • There will be 2 final exams, Paper 1 will be the first exam where students will be tested on their understanding of culture and beliefs, conflict and co-operation and environmental issues. Paper 2 will be based on two studies; Patterns of family Life and Power and Democracy.
 
What will I learn?
·         An understanding of ways in which factors such as cultural, economic, environmental and moral have interacted to shape the world we live in today.
·         An understanding of the opportunities and constraints which influence choices, decisions and judgements made at individual, family national and global levels.
·         An understanding of issues which affect the nature and quality of human life in a contemporary multi-cultural society.
