History - Key Stage 4

What is a GCSE in SHP History?
A GCSE in History helps prepare for everyday life and future experiences by exploring and analysing significant past events in the from the historical world. The course develops and enhances a wide range of research and presentation techniques and encourages questioning of the world around us. Students are guided through the major social and political changes that shaped America and the development of the modern Justice System from the Romans to the 21st Century.
 During this course Students are expected to:
  • Present electronically prepared materials
  • Be prepared to associate past events and compare with similar today
  • Work closely with others and share good practice and techniques, creating a stable learning environment.
 
Subject areas which will be covered over the two years are:
Year 10
  • The American West 1840-1895
  • Crime and Punishment Through Time
  • Coursework 1, History Around us.
 
Year 11
  • Coursework 2, a major contemporary issue
  • Crime and Punishment Through Time
 
How will I be assessed?
25% Coursework
Your performance in coursework will be based on three attainment targets and you will be required to produce 6 pieces of coursework on the following:
 
  • Causation
  • Analysis
  • Analysis, comparison and consequence
 
75% Written Paper
There will be 2 final exams, paper 1 will be the first exam where students will be tested on their analysis and recall of American West, with some Crime and Punishment, with paper 2 testing knowledge and analysis of Crime and Punishment
 
What will I learn?
  • Gain knowledge and understanding and skills needed to research, investigate and analyse events and people from the past, as others interpret them
  • Gain confidence in independent learning and presentation of research.
