What is a GCSE in Geography?
A GCSE in Geography helps prepare students for everyday life and their future through exploring the interaction between people and their environment. Students develop their understanding of local, national and global issues through a wide range of research and communicate their findings in a variety of ways.
Global issues like the Indian Ocean Tsunami and Global Warming help to keep students up to date about the world today. Students will be expected to:
· Work closely with others to research and present information
· Work independently to research issues
· Present information in a variety of ways
Subject areas which will be covered over the two years are:
Year 10
· People and Place (the development of towns)
· Climate and Environment
· Global Warming
Year 11
· Water, Landforms and People
· People, Work and Development
How will I be assessed?
25% Coursework
There are two course studies
· 15% - Fieldwork
· 10% - Cross Unit Task
75% Written Paper
There are two examination papers for each tier. The question content remains the same although the phrasing and terminology may be different.
· Paper 1 – structured questions based on three nominated units (45%)
· Paper 2 – a problem solving exercise based on an issue from a nominated unit (30%)
