Years 7, 8 and 9

  • Level 3

Places

I can show knowledge, skills and understanding at a local scale e.g. settlement study.

I can describe and compare physical and human features of different localities

(comparison of local area with other localities).

Patterns/Processes

I can offer explanations for location of some features of localities (e.g. functions of settlement).

I am aware that different places have similar and different characteristics (e.g. pattern of climate in UK).

I can offer reasons for some of their observations and views and judgements about places and environment.

Environmental Change and Sustainable Development

I can recognise how people seek to improve and sustain environments (e.g. improvements to school, local settlement).

Enquiry/Skills

I can use skills and sources of evidence to respond to a range of geographical questions.

I can begin to use geographical words to communicate findings.

  • Level 4

Places

I know where a place is and what can affect its character.

I can show knowledge, skills and understanding at more than one scale and in different parts of the world.

I can begin to understand how processes can change the features of place (e.g. earthquake, industrial development etc.).

Patterns/Processes

I can begin to recognise and describe patterns.

I can recognise and describe human and physical processes.

I can begin to understand that peoples lives are affected by change.

Environmental Change and Sustainable Development

I understand how people improve and damage the environment.

I can explain my views and the views of others about an environmental change.

Enquiry/Skills

I can suggest suitable geographical questions.

I can use a range of skills to help investigate.

I can use a variety of resources.

I can communicate findings using geographical vocabulary.

  • Level 5

Places

I can describe some of the similarities and differences between places and how they affect the population.

I can recognise some of the links that make places dependent on each other.

Patterns/Processes/Environmental Change and Sustainable Development

I can explain how people can change the environment.

I can explain different viewpoints on environmental change.

I can recognise how people try to manage the environment in a sustainable way.

Enquiry Skills

I can suggest relevant geographical questions and issues.

I can select and use appropriate skills during investigation.

I can select information and sources of evidence.

I can reach conclusions.

I can present findings both graphically and in writing.

  • Level 6

Places

I can describe/explain how processes can make places distinctive (e.g. seaside resorts, rain forests etc.).

I can study places at various scales and locations.

Patterns/Processes

I know how processes at different scales lead to change.

I can recognise many of the links that make places dependent on each other.

Environmental Change and Sustainable Development

I can describe and compare the differing approaches to managing the environment.

I can recognise that people have different values and ideas about how an environment should be used.

I can recognise that different approaches have different outcomes.

Enquiry Skills

I can use my own knowledge and well structured investigation techniques to ask, and answer, their own geographical questions.

I can produce well thought out and detailed conclusions backed with evidence.

  • Level 7

Places

I have a broad breadth of study of places and environments at different scales.

Patterns/Processes

I can describe interactions within/between physical and human processes e.g. location of industry in Japan, and then explain why these patterns occur.

I can understand and explain about what factors influence the decision made for locating places and how this can change environments and places, e.g. should a wind farm be located in a specific area.

Environmental Change and Sustainable Development

I can recognise that human actions have unintended consequences and can lead to conflict, see above.

I can recognise that a policy of sustainable development influences planning decision.

Enquiry Skills

I can use knowledge and understanding to identify geographical questions and issues and to plan own investigation, independently.

I can display a wide range of skills accurately.

I can evaluate reliability of resources, analyse and reach valid and well balanced conclusions based on my findings.

  • Level 8

Places

I have a broad breadth of study of places and environments at different scales.

I can explain the factors that cause places to change over time.

Patterns/Processes

I can explain the links between physical and human processes.

I can account for differences in development and their effect on peoples quality of life.

Environmental Change and Sustainable Development

I am aware of the causes and consequences of environmental issues and understand peoples opinions and their solutions to these problems.

Using examples I can understand how sustainable development can affect myself and the environment.

Enquiry Skills

I can independently select geographical questions and issues to produce a coherent investigation.

I can use skills effectively and accurately.

I can evaluate and use evidence to produce a balanced conclusion.
