  • What is a GCSE in Mathematics?
Mathematics is one of the three core subjects. It is used in every walk of life and plays an integral part of a students’ education. A higher grade pass in mathematics opens a lot of doors whether it be in tertiary education or finding employment. One of the key elements to mathematics is being able to solve problems. A commodity that is highly sort after. 
 
Subject areas which will be covered over the two years are:
  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Shape, Space and Measure
  • Handling Data
 
How will I be assessed?
It is important to note that every student in the country will be given the opportunity to achieve a grade C. There are no longer three tiers of entry. There are now only two ranging from grades A*-D and B-G.
 
20% Coursework
Your performance in coursework will be based on the three attainment targets and you will be required to produce 2 pieces of coursework:
  • An investigation using algebra
  • An investigation using statistics
80% exam
The students will sit a calculator and a non calculator paper. The subject areas that will be assessed are stated above. As we are doing modular mathematics now. The GCSE is broken up into three stages. Stage 1 and 2 consist of 15% of their GCSE. Stage three consists of the final 50%. They sit the examinations at different stages during the 2 years. Stage 1 usually in year 10, stage 2 usually in March and stage three in June with all the other subjects

  • Gain confidence in acquiring new skills and become a better independent learner.

  • Improve your levels of numeracy
