Product Design Key Stage 4

What is a GCSE in Product Design?
Product design revolves around the system life cycle. A problem has to be identified before a design can be formulated. Research is needed to find out exactly what the customers want. The most appropriate materials and tools must then be selected for production. Although many materials must be known about only non-resistant materials will be used here. Anyone wanting wood or metal work should look for a City College course. However, it does include smart materials which can be formed in to a shape which it then keeps.

Subject areas which will be covered over the two years are:
Year 10
  • Pupils will be encouraged to become more informed consumers and designers.
  • They will learn how to evaluate different commercial products and the manufacturing processes used during production.
  • To do this they will also study the components and materials used in design and manufacture.

Year 11
  • Pupils will be given opportunities to improve their own design skills and to consider market influences.
  • They will demonstrate their skills by completing coursework tasks.
